Helping trainee biomedical scientists across Scotland succeed
The NHS Scotland Academy is pleased to offer a new series of Accelerated IBMS Registration Training Portfolio (RTP) Workshops. These online workshops are designed to support trainee biomedical scientists in completing their IBMS RTP. They will run from October 2025 to January 2026.
Who are the workshops for?
These workshops are for biomedical science graduates from non-applied IBMS-accredited BSc (Hons) programmes (those without clinical placements) who:
- Are employed as a biomedical science trainee in an NHS Board Laboratory in Scotland
- Are completing their IBMS Registration Training Portfolio
What do the workshops include?
Each workshop focuses on a key part of the IBMS RTP and includes:
- Live online sessions via Microsoft Teams
- Self-guided learning on NHS Scotland Academy Moodle
- Digital resources and templates to help build portfolio evidence
Trainees can choose to attend one or more workshops depending on their needs.

Workshop format
Each workshop runs over two days:
- Day 1: Self-directed learning on Moodle
- Day 2: Live interactive session on Microsoft Teams
Benefits for trainees and NHS labs
- Trainees gain access to expert-led sessions and high-quality learning materials
- NHS Labs benefit from external training support, helping free up internal staff time
Key information
- Attendance: Trainees must attend both days of any workshop they enrol in
- Portfolio Sign-Off: Evidence is not signed off during workshops; this remains the responsibility of the trainee’s Training Officer or Manager
- Delivery: All sessions are delivered online
- Eligibility: Only trainees employed in NHS Board Laboratories in Scotland can attend
How to apply
Applications must be submitted by the employing NHS Board using the NHSSA recruitment template. Lab Managers or Training Officers should:
- Complete and sign the recruitment form
- Email it to nhsscotlandacademy@nhs.scot
- Submit at least one week before the workshop start date
Once enrolled, trainees will receive access to Moodle and Microsoft Teams links.
