The NHS Scotland Academy runs a National Perioperative Training Programme to accelerate workforce development.

What is the Accelerated Anaesthetic Practitioner Programme?

In collaboration with NHS Boards across Scotland, the Accelerated Anaesthetic Practitioner Programme (AP) offers development and career opportunities to learners preparing for the role of anaesthetic practitioner.

Building on the existing Core Competence Framework for Anaesthetic Practitioners, the programme provides additional learning in a range of areas, including immersive simulation. This competence framework requires learners to receive adequate clinical exposure and knowledge acquisition to be able to show competence.

Through high quality training and education, learners complete the programme ready to join the theatre workforce and to deliver safe and patient-centred care.

Course Structure

Learners participate in a 26-week programme consisting of 8 workshop days at the NHS Scotland Academy Skills and Simulation Centre located at NHS Golden Jubilee.

The workshops use a blended learning approach and simulation to focus on:

  • Emergencies
  • Advanced airway management
  • Obstetrics
  • Paediatrics
  • Remote and isolated anaesthesia

Learners will be given skills acquisition and training time during the workshops to optimise the learning experience.

Who are we?

This programme is delivered by a multi-professional team with expertise relating to each individual workshop topic.

How do I apply?

Spaces for our Perioperative Programmes are allocated by the Scottish Government on a first come first served basis and must be applied for by your Health Board.

Individuals are not able to apply directly – your employer will apply on your behalf.  We will then arrange to transfer a payment to your Board to enable them to support you though the programme.

The relevant clinical/theatre manager within your Health Board is responsible for submitting applications on your behalf. If you are not sure who to contact, please email us at nhsscotlandacademy@nhs.scot.

All NHS Boards submitting applications can do so by visiting Anaesthetic Practitioner Programme recruitment form

The next intake for this programme is 2 September, with the first immersive workshop delivered in the Skills and Simulation Centre at NHS Golden Jubilee on 17 September 2024.
